First Impression Friday – Becoming

First Impression Friday

Hey ya’ll! I am coming at ya with a “weekly” meme thanks to my friend Joe over @ Storeys of Stories! I really liked this idea because it is less commitment on my part (I don’t have to do it EVERY week, only when I start a new book) and gets me talking about books I have just started (or want to start very soon).

Straight from the horse’s mouth (if you will):

First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.  Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.  Did you think you’d love it and ended up hating it? Or did you think you’d hate it and wound up loving it? Or were you exactly right? I think what will really make this meme a lot of fun, is linking back to it from your review to say, “Look at how wrong I was!” OR “See? I knew it all along!”

This week I started: Becoming by Michelle Obama

This book guys. It was completely unplanned for me to read this right now. Obviously I wanted to eventually get to it, maybe even buy it? But I had no intention of picking it up for a while, at least until my brother put it on hold for me at the library. I somehow ended up at the top of the very long holds list and when it was dropped in my lap early this week, I decided that I would be a fool not to take advantage of this.

The writing is so good. It doesn’t even feel like a memoir. More like a story that someone is telling to me, and i’m not even listening to the audiobook! Michelle Obama is a wonderful person. Someone I look up to. She is intelligent and kind, and is always poised and respectful. She is endlessly interesting, her AND her husband, and I am looking forward to peeking into her life.

Even though this is a library book, I can see myself purchasing this later down the line. I do really enjoy a well written memoir/biography, and have a small collection of them going.

I am four chapters into the book, so about 48 pages read. At this rate, I am predicting a 5 out of 5 stars for Becoming. I would honestly be surprised by any other rating.
