End of the Year Survey {2018}

I did this survey last year mostly because it was the most thorough and detailed “end of the year” tag that I had seen my short time in the blogging community. Here we are though, an entire year (and 200+ followers) later and this is still the best one I have seen thus far! It was created 9 YEARS AGO by The Perpetual Page Turner as a tool to organize herself and now serves as a fun tag for all of us! Make sure that if you choose to do this survey, you link back to her as she is the original creator. I want to make a note that all the header/graphics for this survey were created by me, but you can find the original ones on Perpetual Page Turner’s blog post linked above.

Now without any further ado, let’s get down to the books…

1. Best Book You Read In 2018?

How about a top four? I have such a hard time choosing this year…

29749085 17286849 34728667 32620332

Three YAs and an Adult Fiction. They were all my favorite for different reasons. The only thing they have in common? The fact that these stories stayed with me long after I put the book down. That is usually a good tell (for me) that it was a great book.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

35297394 35297272 36260157 39508596 35099058

The Wicked Deep – Shea Ernshaw; This was my most anticipated for 2018, and while I really enjoyed it, I know a lot of people had a lot of problems with it so that dampened my overall enjoyment of the story. I also didn’t really adore the main character, and would have liked to have more time with the sisters than we did.

Emergency Contact – Mary HK Choi; This one just sounded like it was right up my alley but fell flat for me. The “awkward” meeting wasn’t as bad as it was hyped to be, the main character was utterly unlikable for me, and I had a number of problems with a bunch of the other characters. I liked it, but I didn’t love it as much as I really wanted to.

What If It’s Us – Adam Silvera & Becky Albertalli; This was supposed to be the cream of the crop! I haven’t read books by either of these authors but from what I could tell they were both legends in the book world. Coming together was supposed to be epic and it ended up being super problematic. Surprise here, I did NOT like one of the main characters, and the romance was so stale and forced that it was hard to root for. I enjoyed the references and most of the other characters though. And the writing, but the story itself was a hard one to enjoy.

Wildcard – Marie Lu; Warcross was great! It wasn’t as good as Ready Player One, which I felt like it mimicked a lot, but it was still a pretty great story on it’s own. The sequel should have been epic and awesome and it was sooo very boring.

Gunslinger Girl – Lyndsay Ely; Ohhh I wanted this to be so good. And it was? I just wanted different things from it. I will deff pick up more of this author’s work, but this one left me hanging a little bit.

 3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?

29749085 35464020 25526296 28962906

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo; I was NOT expecting to love this book as much as I did. It is really really pushing me to pick up Six of Crows since everyone is so in love with it, and I have now fallen in love with Bardugo’s writing.

The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani; This one took me by complete surprise. I don’t even know why I picked it up to begin with but it blew me away. It was so powerful and beautifully written. Just heartbreaking and perfect.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire; This one surprised me too! I was not sure at all that I would like this series but since it was so short I gave it a shot and really loved it! It is not my typical style or genre but I don’t know, it made a fan out of me. So I am on board.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco; I have all of these books so far. I even have a signed ARC of Escaping from Houdini and met the author! But I couldn’t make it past like 20 pages. I don’t know what I was expecting out of it but I was a little taken aback by the description and the gore. Hopefully one day I will be able to get past it but for now, they are just pretty covers on my shelf.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

31450908 34728667

I don’t really like to read a whole lot of fantasy (which makes my blog name a little misleading) but these two were stand outs for me. Books that have me interested in some more from the genre.

 8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

34728667 32620332

So vastly different and yet… both so unputdownable.

 9. Book You Read In 2018 That You Would Be MOST Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

34728667

11. Most memorable character of 2018?

Evelyn Hugo for sure.

This is a tough one. I have a hard time remembering the way things are written unfortunately.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2018?

I’m going to do a one-two punch with this one here. SO devastating but so so important.

17. Book That Shocked You The Most

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year

Evelyn Hugo & Harry Cameron in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. There are not many friendships that are written as beautifully as theirs. They really did, regardless of anything else that may have happened in their lives, Evelyn and Harry loved each other until the very end.

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2018 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

Almost all the books I read this year were by authors that I had never read before!

21. Best Book You Read In 2018 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure/Bookstagram, Etc.:

This is tough because picking a book I read based SOLELY on a rec implies that I had no interest in the book otherwise. Like I wouldn’t have even touched it if it weren’t for the recommendation. And I don’t typically read things I am not interested in. Unfortunately, I am a big believer in reading descriptions before getting into a book because I have to be confident that I want to read it. That being said, as I mentioned earlier I am not a huge Fantasy reader but this one was getting SO MUCH crazy positive reviews that I had to read it. Thank goodness for that!

blogging life

1. New favorite book blog/Bookstagram/Youtube channel you discovered in 2018?

Hailey in Bookland {youtube} – I don’t remember if I started watching her this year or not but I can’t get enough.

Super Space Chick {youtube & others} – I just really love her. She is super cute and a bit more famous than I originally thought!

Read with Cindy {youtube} – OH MY FUCKING GOD. I needed Cindy in my life like yesterday. She can be so cynical and honestly it feels like she doesn’t like a damn thing but she isn’t usually wrong either and it is just so refreshing to have someone review books that doesn’t feel the need to be nice the entire time.

Obviously I was super into Booktube this year. It was a huge time waster and prevented me on more than one occasion from actually reading but I really enjoyed watching these people talk about things that I also love and enjoy.

2. Favorite post you wrote in 2018?

I am pretty proud of blogging overall this year. It has made a huge improvement from 2017, and to pick one from this past year wouldn’t be fair.

3. Favorite bookish related photo you took in 2018:?

Hitting 200 followers. I honestly could not have predicted in my wildest dreams to have ever had more than even 20 followers and yet here we are, slowing creeping toward 300. I am utterly humbled and just overjoyed with the amount of support and love in this community.

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?

SLUMP! I was not anticipating getting into a reading slump at the tail end of this year! It has really held me back from finishing as strong as I would have liked but as I am coming to realize, it happens to us all.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?

I had the most views on my 100 Followers Celebration post this year. You can see it here:

  1. I wasn’t initially sure about Bardugo’s Wonder Woman. Something about the prose was off-putting and I nearly didn’t finish. But it hit its stride towards the middle and I ended up really enjoying it!
